Who is your Amy? A Story Of Not Best Friends.
Today is October 9th, my friend Amy’s birthday. Now when I write friend I think that isn’t the word I should use to describe her, she is my best friend, but then I think that term isn’t it either that is what we were to each other. A best friend is a someone you hang out with all the time when you are a child or a teenager, your go to person.
Now, that is definitely what Amy and I were to each other, the truth be known we were the 2 in our group that were crazy enough to do anything and try everything and so we always wound up in the same places, you know… the principals office, the party of 20 year-olds when we’re only 14, where we discovered that Slurpees were the perfect mix for Vodka as well as Blue Curacao. We did everything together, we crushed on the same boys, we shared clothes, secrets and each others hearts.
As we grew up or I think I should rephrase that as we have gotten older we have had to realize that we were not the same person with the same wants, needs or place in the universe anymore. We unravelled our identities to become to two distinct women instead of one crazy best friend duo. At times this separation was confusing and painful but eventually we each found our place together, not attached at the hip together.
Now it’s like we’re an old married couple or like sisters?… See, that’s just not it either, you know what I mean that person where you have been through so much that you no longer sweat the small stuff, you annoy each other, you laugh, you cry, time and distance don’t apply.
And then you say good bye, until next time because there will always be a next time. See I just don’t think that should be called a best friend because it is so much more than that, it is so much more than friend and so much more than best. I guess I will just call her my Amy!
Happy Birthday my Amy!!
You are an amazing spirit in this world and I wish you all the best today and forever, you lift me up and make me giggle, thank you for all the memories!
